《了不起的老爸》则讲了一位父亲为患了到一定时间眼睛会失明的奇特病症的儿子将来生活的打算，一心要让孩子提前适应盲人的生活，让其闭上眼睛按键盘学习钢琴、走盲道等等，强烈禁止本有长跑天赋的孩子参加马拉松训练，孩子最后还是失明，父亲知道了自己之前所做有错，幡然醒悟，开始对孩子进行弥补。他扮演孩子的男保姆陪孩子参加马拉松比赛而做各种训练，最后实现了孩子奔跑在市民马拉松比赛队伍里的心愿。整个故事主打在单身父亲的家长愿望与眼睛失明的孩子内心心愿的矛盾上，最终父亲妥协和解。这部影片也可以说是亲情片、励志片，但全片不少的体育训练和为达到进入马拉松正规队伍少年付出的不少努力，我们也可以将其归入到体育片类型。整部电影父子间的情感是让人揪心和动容的，但该类影片在观众代入感的打通上，影片的商业性元素的搭配和操作上，也是需要再思考和解决的。
